Introduction
Grading scales for Marks book define the marks students can receive in a class or on an assessment. In some instances, they also map to a particular grade.
For example, if you set up a Letter grading scale based on an A-E grade scale and define an A grade as a score of 85-100%, then 85% and higher is the top tier for the grading scale.
Zunia comes with a Number grading scale ranging from 0 to 100. In addition, you can create a Letter grading scale or a Text grading scale. The Marks book uses these scales to determine grades.
This guide shows you how to create the different types of grading scales for Marks book to use when marking assessments.
Note: You will not be able to edit or delete the Number grading scale.
Create a Letter grading scale for Marks book
A Letter grading scale is defined on a percentage scale of 0% to 100%, with each letter assigned a percentage range. For example, A could be 85-100%.
To create a new Letter grading scale for Marks book, go to Set up learning > Grading scales.
- Select Add grading scale.
- In Grading scale name enter the name of the grading scale. For example, A-E five point scale.
- In Type, select the grading used for assessment. In this case, Letter.
- Enter each level of your grading scale and the minimum value for each grade.
For example, an ‘A’ grade with a minimum value of 85 means ‘A’ grade is 85-100%. The highest grade automatically has a maximum value of 100. For the lowest grade, you may want to enter a 0 in Minimum value. - Select Add against Grading points to add more grade levels.
- Select X to delete any grade levels.
- Select Add when you're done, and you'll get notified that you've created a new grading scale.
Create a Text grading scale for Marks book
A Text grading scale uses words of your choice to represent grade levels, for example Excellent, Satisfactory, Needs Improvement or Unsatisfactory. You can also use emojis using the built-in emoji selector in your browser.
Each grade level has a score, with a higher grade level having a higher score. For example, Excellent may have score 6. The Text grading scale is considered a point scale for grading, where the number for each point of the scale is used to calculate overall scores and grades within the Marks book.
To create a new Text grading scale for Marks book, go to Set up learning > Grading scales.
- Select Add grading scale.
- In Grading scale name enter the name of the grading scale. For example, Excellent to Unsatisfactory.
- In Type, select the grading used for assessment. In this case, Text.
- Enter each grade level of your grading scale. A higher grade level corresponds to a higher score. For example, you may enter 'Excellent' against score 6 and ‘Unsatisfactory’ against the lowest score. Select Add against Score to add more grade levels.
- Select X to delete any grade levels.
- Select Add when you're done, and you'll get notified that you've created a new grading scale.
You’ve now created grading scales to use for marking assessments.
